How do you train for rowing without a ERG

i’ve been rowing for 8 weeks now in one of my cambridge college’s novice boats, and am hoping to move up to the 2nd senior boat after the christmas break. what sort of regime and foods would you recommend? i read in rowing and regatta magazine a few issues ago that cycling is the next best alternative to erging as it uses the quads in a similar manner. do a circuit of some sort every 2-3 days and cycling for an hour minimum daily. realistically you should cut down a bit on how much you eat because you’ll unlikely be burning off quite as many calories, but with the xmas period it’s almost expected you put on a bit of weight. i’m sculling tomorrow morning with a club up here who seem really friendly and glad to have me for holidays!

otherwise, just running and heading to the gym when possible. theme for the christmas holidays: fitness not fatness. bike riding is good to because it works the legs out more similar to the rowing motion, also squats and lots of them, a rowing race is basically a squat race, get good at them, make sure you do t hem properly straight back and all i’ve been using an experimental training schedule which involves cake and turkey. would it be a bit much to ask for a fitz flair? :d yeah, i thought about that as well, none of the colours match our blades! but running is probably one of the best things to do for staying fit over a break.
