i have been offered an interview with cn rail to be a train conductor this week and was looking for any info people may have about working as a conductor ie what career paths can you move into- work schedule- pay- general pro’s and cons hey locomotive engineer here for cn been working for them for ten years. but if you want to make money you will have to make road trips which is all on call and never knowing when and where you are going to work. but if you have people in your life that understand it then i would recommend the job because it is super easy and the pay and benefits are phenomenal for what you do. last four years that i have worked as a locomotive engineer, which is what you will progress to if you stay with the company, i have averaged 150k+ every year with good time off. thanks a lot for the info i am a pipefitter and have basically spent the last 3 years having to chase short term work around and waiting and wondering when the phone will ring and when i will head back to work so just really looking for a more stable career. they call the job the “marriage killer.”
you will always be on call, and never have a fixed schedule, so tough to plan for future dates. 4 weeks in a class room, 3 weeks out in the yard and they roughly pay 1800/biweekly put you up in a hotel and give you 3 meals a day. there’s a specific hour amount you have to train on the job before you’re considered fully qualified. you can make a lot of money as a conductor if you’re on the road getting lots of miles under your belt, can range from $60k-80k/yr. once you’re in the company you can even transfer and apply for other positions doing other things within the company. just remember, it’s a lifestyle, and the hours are probably going to really suck, but in the end i think it’s worth it depending on what you wanna do. it sounds pretty cool and i always here they are a good employer as matthew said it seems they are very open to applicants i am a pipefitter and have no experience or anything to do with the railway and they contacted me so just apply for their jobs.
