you just have to find the right place and work your ass off. for a year i thought machining was a bad idea and a waste of my time, but i toughed it out and moved on to a better company. i’ve met the coolest engineers, programmers and supervisors where i work and they all started on the floor and have at least 5 years of experience running a machine in the shop they work in. i went to a trade school and got hired right out of school to work at an aerospace shop. fact of it is though, i have always been able to support my wife and 2 kids and buy a house with just my income.
nothing great, but i was out of work for awhile and it was a job i knew i’d have the following week. i was in a similar boat and the best advice i have for you is to be careful with how many hours you work. the first time i put in my notice, it was for a $6/hr raise. i thought myself 5 axis programming and have been doing that for the past 7 years. in my opinion if you want to become an engineer, programmer or get into management then i recommend starting as a machinist and working hard to achieve that rank. i’m just trying to say that machining is a great trade and the best stepping stone to working your way up the ladder, you just have to work hard and learn.
