ill be applying at costco in the next month im currently middle managment at walmart, so im curious. however, i want to applaud you for taking the initiative to want to map out your potential career path within the company. seeing that we are going to start hiring for seasonal summer positions, it is more than likely those spots will be for reserved for entry level, such as front end assistants, food court, stocker. so what’s easy from one person can be regarded as complicated to another. if you are serious about growing and progressing, whatever position you start at, i strongly suggest that you make the effort to, at least, try to excel in it. even if you think/feel that no one is watching and you can horseplay around like employees who have been there for years- someone is always watching and will took note of those truly working and who aren’t. an example is a guy who was hired last summer. after he made his ninety days, he became a cashier(he applied for the spot during his probationary period) and three months after that is now a front end supervisor, much to the displeasire of many older employees. the same is happening to a stocker freshly hired last november.
managers will fight to keep an employee who is a proven asset to the company and contributes a smooth, effective work ethic. keep in mind your experience means nothing, and you get to start at the bottom. as a former walmart associate of 13 years getting in the door is the most important thing. select any position and availability that’s your best bet. front end is the best if you want to be noticed. you have the most interactions with managers from most departments and you have the opportunity to really get to know the warehouse, the programs and the corporate culture. just try and get your foot in the door and then work hard to stand out among other new hires. if you happen to get hired then also volunteer anytime they need people for front end and other positions. pay your dues, serve your time, stay in it for the long haul and it will pay off. it is not for the weak though.
