i am pretty desperate to break 7 minutes since winter training is coming up. my last 2k i did was back in march and i went 7:18. i need to go sub-7 because i’m falling behind and i need to break this benchmark to keep my seat secure. my rating was between a 30 and a 32. by the 1,000 meter mark, i stopped because i started slipping fast and was clinging on to a 1:50 split and my average was at a 1:47.5 and climbing. although my breathing was somewhat heavy, i wasn’t gasping for air like a 2k should have you doing and it felt like my legs couldn’t keep up the power. i don’t have access to weights we could discuss all the complicated, unique ways that you could train to magically improve due to complex, unusual training secrets. do 6x500m intervals at a little bit of a higher rate and a lower split than your 2k target, so 1:43-44 at a r32-34 (with a teammate!! when you say your “cardio was fine”, i’m guessing you meant that you felt what was holding you back was your ability to rate high/power through the pain at a high rate? so yeah… a little more steady state never killed anybody.
if you’re trying to stay a lightweight – go up to 164. if you don’t want to stop there then shoot for 180. more steady state is the first tip. increase steady state volume, try and fit in 2x8k 3 times a week, or 2x30minutes, or really any distance at a set hr zone/and or/watts second tip? try and fit these in often. my friend who went 6:13 did 3x500m sprints every day the week before his 2k. i ask because it seems to not be working. if steady state what is the pace? summer was 6 days a week of steady state (either 3×20 min or 60 min) at 5k +10 to 12 usually or 20 min pyramid workouts with increasing/decreasing ratings. you’re the same height as me, and about 5 lbs heavier.
